Twenty-Five years ago to the day, my wife and I opened the doors to Allambie Vet. It is interesting to think about the changes that have taken place in pet health care over that time. Probably the most important change is that pets have moved out of the back yard and are now firmly entrenched in our living rooms as part of the family.
The close bonds that have developed between families and pets have not only benefited the pet’s health but there have been countless studies showing the health benefits for their owners.
Being in close proximity to their owners means pets have to be cleaner and free of the likes of fleas and bad breath, which has benefited their general health. Because of the close attachment to their pets, owners now ask for higher quality diagnostics and treatments to help their pets if injured or unwell and are prepared to provide the better nutrition recommended today.
There has also been an explosion in the knowledge in veterinary science. Our staff of around fifteen are constantly updating their skills and knowledge. This year alone we have staff doing masters degrees, sitting membership exams and completing certificates in veterinary nursing. Every member of staff will undertake a significant, structured course this year.
And then there is the technology. Twenty-Seven years ago when I was at Sydney Uni, each final year veterinary science student had to write about a topic of their choice. I wrote about an emerging technology in vet science; ultrasound. Today, in our practice we use colour Doppler ultrasound almost on a daily basis. Add to this video endoscopy, in house laboratories that give us blood results within minutes, and host of other new technologies and you can see how far pet health care has come.
But vet practice is not about equipment and buildings. It is about people and their pets, and the dedicated staff who strive to provide the best patient care they can.
My wife and I and our now adult children have greatly enjoyed being part of the Allambie Vet journey and we would like to thank all those people and pets who have helped make it a success.
