Dentistry for your pet has become an established aspect of good veterinary care. It can be something that we don't often think about as our pets cannot tell us (and don't often show many outward signs) when they have a problem in their mouth. One of the best things a pet owner can do to insure the overall health of their pet is to do routine checking of the teeth, gums and oral cavity.

Examination is the key to diagnosis, and helps determine the type of treatment needed. All pet owners can help by examining your pet's teeth and oral cavity, at least monthly. First, smell your dog or cat's breath. If you sense a disagreeable odour, gum disease may present. Also look for chips or fractures on the tooth's surface. When your home exam reveals any dental problems, or if you are still uncertain, please make an appointment and come in to see us.

What may a dental exam include for my pet?
An oral examination usually begins with a complete visual examination of the face, mouth and each tooth. Frequently, pets' mouths have several different problems that need care. If there is the need for further treatment, sedation and anaesthesia are essential to adequately evaluate oral conditions. Anaesthesia allows the vet to thoroughly examine each tooth individually. Preventative care and periodic check-ups can help hinder the loss of your pet's teeth.

If a day surgery is required, it will more than likely involve a full general anaesthetic. This will help to take away your pet's anxiousness and nerves. Most dentistries involve a scale and polish of all teeth which will remove both plaque and tartar. In the more severe cases, teeth are removed due to the tooth roots being damaged and exposed.

How can I help?
Your pet does not have to suffer the pain and discomfort of untreated broken, loose teeth, or infected gums. You can help by giving your pet regular dental chew treats, providing them with chew toys and raw bones. This, in addition to the help of thorough examinations, x-rays, dental care, your pet can have healthy teeth and keep smiling.
